A New Release and Writing Community

Bri, thank you so much for hosting me on your blog.  I am so excited to start the blog tour of my second novel Raven’s Song on your site.  I really get a kick out of seeing you at different book events and following your posts on face book. You have so much energy and enthusiasm for the craft.  Sometimes I wonder where you find the energy to do all the things you do.  One of these days we will have to sit down to coffee and I will spend a few hours siphoning out your secrets. (Fab Lucinda, congrats. I'd love to sit down and shoot the breeze.)

Spaghetti and The Sentence

Spaghetti and The Sentence

“What about you?” Clint asked, his face filled with curiosity. “Do you like to cook?”

Rachel preened and knew it. She was proud of her culinary skills. “I do okay,” she assured him.

“Oh, yeah?” Challenge lit Clint’s eyes. “Cook something for me and prove it.”

“You don’t think I can?”

“I didn’t say that.”

Rachel scowled. “No, but you hinted at it.”

Clint just stood there with a faint smile on his handsome face, so Rachel picked up the gauntlet he had thrown down. “Okay, I will. I’ll cook dinner for you tomorrow night.”

“I’ll look forward to it.”

Had she totally lost her mind? Why had she done that? She didn’t have to prove anything to Clint Hayes. Well, it was too late to cancel now. If she didn’t cook the stupid dinner for him, he’d think she couldn’t.

She stormed back to the house where she belonged and slammed the door behind her. “Goodness,” her mother exclaimed. “What’s got you in such a snit?”

“Clint!”

Mrs. Amos turned to Rachel and set her coffee down. “What did he do?”

“He manipulated me into cooking dinner for him tomorrow night.”

A faint smile crossed her mother’s face. “And how did he do that in such a short time?”

“He insinuated I don’t know how to cook.”

Mrs. Amos took a seat at the kitchen table. “Sit down with me, Rachel.”

Rachel pulled a chair out and joined her mother. “Yes, ma’am?”

“Honey, you be careful with Clint.”

Ordinary Housewife or Deadly Assassin

Character perspective:  Alexa Martinez – Ordinary Housewife or Deadly Assassin

Alexa didn’t grow up believing in fairy tales.  From an early age, she was trained to kill—literally.  Her father was a contractor for The Company (CIA) and she worked with her father.  Sometimes the line between good and evil blurred, but she was the one of the best operatives in the business.  She was taught that fear would get you killed.  So she lived her life always keeping one eye on the door and one hand on her gun.  Even after she married, she continued to live dangerously—until she had her daughter.

Basement Level Five: Never Scared picks up years after her daughter was born.  Alexa is retired from the business and has taken on the role of ordinary housewife.  Yet she’ll never be normal, and her children live with constant guards.  It was the internal conflict between Alexa’s past and her future that propelled the book.

At its core, the book is about her choice to leave the past behind for her children.  I wanted the conflict to be one that would resonate with many people.  I think a lot of us have made questionable choices while younger that continue to impact us as we age.  At this stage in her life, she’s firmly running away from her past.  She has tried to be a good wife, loving mother, and dependable friend because she wants to be better for her children.  She has the best intentions.  Unfortunately, she can’t run from her past.

Alexa is one of my favorite characters because there are so many layers to her.  She’s a complicated woman.  On one hand, she’s definitely not someone you want to cross.  If she’s gunning for you, fear is an appropriate emotion.  On the other hand, she’s a person you definitely want on your side.  She loves her family unconditionally.  She’s loyal and a fierce protector of those she loves.  Alexa is a flawed character, but my hope is that readers will root for her as much as I do.
Basement Level 5: Never Scared will be released on April 28th through Black Opal Books (www.blackopalbooks.com)

Blurb:  Alexa Martinez was raised to believe that murder, deceit, and lies were a part of life. A trained killer, she follows in her father’s footsteps, specializing in political assassinations for Martinez Security—contracted through the CIA. She thrives on the power, money, respect, and—most of all—the adrenaline rush.

Despite the danger associated with her profession, Alexa strives to give her children a normal life. But when her past catches up with her, they become pawns in a deadly game of revenge. Operating from a secret base five levels below ground, Alexa struggles to unravel the puzzle, uncovering secrets that will their alter lives forever. Now she must make a choice—is she willing to die to give her children a life outside the bullet proof glass?

It's A Day of Reckoning...A Day of Release...Glazier's Release

Those of you who know me on social media, or have read the blog at all know I'm a sassy southern belle. Well today I'm going a step farther and being brassy. What has spurred this sudden post more toward my blunt cocky side and less of my sweet sass? Perhaps its the fact I'm on a trip to my roots...my beloved south...or could it possibly be that I just released Glazier!
