Did That Really Happen?

Did That Really Happen?
Guest post by Jennifer Comeaux, author of Life on the Edge

Have you ever experienced something in your life, perhaps a long-awaited event or a fulfilled dream, and thought afterward, “Did that really happen?” That’s what I kept asking myself after I returned from my trip to the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Attending the Olympics always seemed like an unreachable dream. Tickets would be impossible to secure, lodging would be a nightmare to obtain, the costs would be too outrageous. But then the unexpected happened. A batch of tickets for the figure skating events became available a few months before the 2010 Games, and I made the spur-of-the-moment decision to buy some. I was shaking as I pressed the “Purchase” button online. The tickets were pricey, but I couldn’t let the opportunity of a lifetime pass by–the opportunity to realize a dream I’d had since I was a kid watching the “Battle of the Brians” on TV during the 1988 Olympics.

I’m so glad I pressed that button because the four days I spent in Vancouver were everything I imagined the Olympics would be and more. I shared the experience with a couple of friends, and we made the most of every minute–from gawking at the Olympic cauldron downtown to attending early morning ice dance practice to going up Grouse Mountain at two in the morning for the taping of the TODAY Show. It was a whirlwind trip but full of so many moments I’ll remember forever.

I love to take photographs, so I tried to capture in photos the feel-good spirit and energy that was everywhere in Vancouver. I also recorded a few videos of some of my favorite moments. Check out the links below for all of the photos and videos!

My novel, Life on the Edge, is a story of forbidden love set in the world of competitive figure skating. Here’s a bit more about the book:

Nineteen-year-old Emily is new to pairs skating, but she and her partner Chris have a big dream–to be the first American team to win Olympic gold. Their young coach Sergei, who left Russia after a mysterious end to his skating career, believes they can break through and make history.

Emily and Chris are on track to be top contenders at the 2002 Winter Games. But when forbidden feelings spark between Emily and Sergei, broken trust and an unexpected enemy threaten to derail Emily’s dreams of gold.

  1. That's awesome Jennifer! I've alway wanted to go watch the Olympics. Last summer I went to see the old ski jump in the UP in Michigan where they had some olympic stuff years ago. It was cool!
